Paphos Archaeological Park
UNESCO-listed Roman villas with mosaic floors beside the harbour.
Worth it?The main reason to visit the town, since the mosaic floors are still in place. Go early, because it is an open-air site.
Paphos is the best Cyprus base for visitors who want archaeology and a quieter coast. Its UNESCO-listed Roman mosaics and the Tombs of the Kings are in the town, while the Akamas, Coral Bay, Kouklia and Polis are within day-trip range. It is not the right choice if you want big-city nightlife or beach-hopping on sand.

UNESCO-listed Roman villas with mosaic floors beside the harbour.
Worth it?The main reason to visit the town, since the mosaic floors are still in place. Go early, because it is an open-air site.
Rock-cut underground tombs by the sea.
Worth it?Worth adding as a second site: a different kind of visit from the mosaics, beside the sea.
A harbour promenade and small fort, good for evenings.
Worth it?An easy evening walk, with restaurants along the promenade.
Walking trails and wild coast north of Paphos.
Worth it?Plan a full day for it, because the trails and wild coast are some distance from town.
The sanctuary of Aphrodite and the sea stack of her legend.
Worth it?Fits a half-day on the road towards Limassol: an ancient sanctuary and a famous sea stack.
Paphos is not a sandy resort strip. Coral Bay is the most developed sandy beach near the town, Lara Bay is wild and undeveloped, and Petra tou Romiou is a scenic pebble beach. See best beaches in Cyprus for the full picture.
The harbour area has many restaurants of variable quality; villages around the town and in the hills are often better for meze and local cooking. Ask for fresh fish by weight and check the price first.
Paphos Airport is the closest airport and is a short drive from the town. From Larnaca, expect a substantial road transfer: use live directions to plan, and consider an open-jaw ticket. Buses link the main towns; check Cyprus Public Transport. A car is strongly advised beyond Kato Paphos.
Paphos is the most rewarding all-round base for travellers who care about history and prefer a calmer coast. Its weakness is that the best things are spread out: the town, the Akamas and Kouklia each need a car or a tour. If you accept that, a week here is easy to fill.
