Nicosia around the race
Visit Cyprus describes Nicosia as an ancient walled city and a modern capital side by side, with Venetian walls and heart-shaped bastions around the old city. Our guide to divided Cyprus and old Nicosia covers the walls and the official information on the buffer zone, and the Nicosia overview explains how to use the city as a day trip or a base.
January weather
Visit Cyprus names January as the coolest month, so a morning start is likely to be cool. See Cyprus in winter for the official figures. Visit Cyprus also lists public holidays on 1 and 6 January, but not on 24 January, so normal opening hours apply: see Cyprus public holidays.
Seeing the old city
Visit Cyprus says Nicosia's history goes back to the Bronze Age, that in antiquity it was known as Ledra, and that it has been the capital since the Late Byzantine period. It lists a guided walk of the walled city, with the programme on the Visit Nicosia website and the Laiki Geitonia tourist information office as the contact. The old city's walls date from the 16th century, according to the same page.
Getting around
Visit Cyprus says urban buses link areas within the towns and operate frequently during the daytime, and that taxis are available in every town and must use a meter. Race morning is the exception: roads near the course may be closed, so check the organiser's information before you rely on a taxi or a hire car.
