Cyprus in Winter

Winter is a good time for sightseeing, walking and villages, not for beach holidays. Expect mild days, some rain, a green countryside and snow in the Troodos at times. Archaeological sites are quieter and more comfortable, but some seasonal resort businesses in Ayia Napa and Protaras close, so base yourself in a town.

Best for
Walkers, culture travellers, couples and anyone who wants Cyprus without the summer crowds.
How much time
A week in a town base such as Paphos, Limassol or Larnaca, with day trips to the mountains.

Winter is the season to see Cyprus's sites and mountains without the heat, and the season to give up on reliable sea swimming. The island is greener, the main archaeological sites are comfortable to walk, and the Troodos can be white. The cost is changeable weather and a cooler sea. For current conditions use the Department of Meteorology. The figures quoted below are indicative ones from the Visit Cyprus climate page, the Deputy Ministry of Tourism's official guide.

What to expect

TopicReality
WeatherVisit Cyprus describes winters, December to February, as mild, with rain and with snow on the Troodos that usually starts before Christmas. Evenings are cool, and the weather is changeable.
SwimmingSea swimming is the main thing winter takes away. January to March are the coolest months for the sea, with average temperatures of 16 to 17°C according to Visit Cyprus. Whether that is swimmable is a personal call; if you want comfortable swimming, choose a hotel with a heated pool.
CrowdsQuieter than summer at the main sites; confirm for the site you plan to visit.
ClosuresSeasonal bars, beach businesses and boat operators can close or cut services, and the east-coast resorts are the most seasonal. Check before you book.
MountainsFor January, Visit Cyprus gives an indicative daily temperature of 10°C on the central plain and 3°C on the higher Troodos. Snow falls mainly on the highest peaks. In cold spells, news reports describe police limiting some mountain roads to four-wheel-drive vehicles or cars with snow chains.

How the winter months differ

PeriodWhat changes
DecemberVisit Cyprus notes that December and January are winter for Cypriots but can feel like autumn to foreign visitors, with occasional rain. Some resort businesses may already have shut, and Christmas and New Year events are organised by each municipality.
JanuaryVisit Cyprus names January as the coolest month, with snow most likely on the Troodos peaks. Epiphany Day, 6 January, is a public holiday.
FebruaryChangeable, with warm days possible but cold evenings. Visit Cyprus says almond trees are in bloom and conditions are ideal for skiing in the Troodos. The flamingos usually leave the salt lake by the end of the month.
MarchVisit Cyprus calls the weather moderate, with plenty of sunshine, and March an excellent month for long country walks. Limassol Carnival can fall here: see below. See also Cyprus in spring.

What to do in winter

  • See the archaeological sites. Paphos, Kourion and Choirokoitia are more comfortable without summer heat. See ancient sites in Cyprus.
  • Walk the coast. The Akamas and the coastal paths suit the cooler months. Avoid gorges after heavy rain. See best hikes in Cyprus.
  • Watch the flamingos. BirdLife Cyprus says flamingos usually arrive at the Larnaca and Akrotiri salt lakes in November and leave by the end of February, though some juveniles may stay longer if water levels allow. The birds are very sensitive to disturbance: BirdLife Cyprus asks visitors to keep their distance, not to walk into the lake and not to fly drones over them.
  • Visit the villages and wineries. It is a quiet time for Omodos, Lefkara and the wine villages. Confirm winery opening before you drive.
  • Try the snow, with caution. Limassol Tourism says the Troodos offers skiing conditions from January to March, and that the Cyprus Ski Club operates four lifts at the Troodos Ski Centre. Lifts depend on snow on the day, so check with the club before you drive up.
  • Use the cities on wet days. Nicosia's museums and Limassol's restaurants are indoor options when the weather turns.

A winter week that works

  1. Base in Paphos or Limassol for the whole week. Both are towns with a year-round local economy, so more stays open than in a beach resort.
  2. Spend two mornings at the big sites: the Paphos mosaics and Kourion.
  3. Take one mountain day for villages and a painted church or two. Check the forecast and the road first.
  4. Take one walking day on the Akamas coast in clear weather, with a late lunch afterwards.
  5. Keep one morning for the Larnaca salt lake if the flamingos are in (November to February), or for Nicosia's museums if not.
  6. Leave a buffer day so a wet forecast does not cost you a plan.

Winter traditions worth planning around

Epiphany Day, 6 January, is a public holiday in Cyprus, and Orthodox Cyprus marks it with a blessing of the waters. A priest throws a cross into the sea and swimmers dive to retrieve it. News reports describe ceremonies at the old port in Limassol, at the marina in Larnaca, at the harbour in Paphos and, inland, at the lake in Nicosia's Athalassa Park. Programmes and locations change from year to year, so check the municipality before you go.

Limassol Carnival runs for eleven days, in February or March depending on the year. Limassol Tourism lists the 2027 carnival as 4 to 14 March, ending with the Grand Carnival Parade on Sunday 14 March; Green Monday, a public holiday, follows on 15 March. The Limassol tourism site publishes each year's dates and programme.

Where to base yourself

BaseWhy in winter
PaphosSites, harbour and restaurants, with the Akamas nearby
LimassolA year-round city with plenty open and a central position for Kourion and the hills
LarnacaEasy logistics, and the salt lake for the flamingo season (November to February)
Troodos villagesQuiet and good for walking, but check heating, opening and the road

If your dates are flexible, March and April are the usual alternative: see Cyprus in spring.
