Pissouri, in the Limassol district, hosts an open-water swimming weekend each November. This is the third Pissouri edition. The programme below follows the organiser's site, with the Visit Cyprus listing as a second source. Start times, course changes and sea conditions are the organiser's to confirm.

The programme

DayWhat the organiser lists
Friday 13 NovemberRace kit collection, a safety and race-course briefing, and an open question session for athletes at Columbia Beach Resort.
Saturday 14 NovemberThe 3 km and 5 km races for all age categories at Pissouri Beach, followed by a juniors race of 1.25 km for ages 13 to 17 and a kids race of 0.5 km for ages 8 to 12. The junior and kids races start after the adult races, so parents can finish their own swim and cheer from the beach. Awards ceremony at 11:00 on the beach.
Sunday 15 NovemberThe 8 km individual race and the 8 km relay. Participants take a bus from the Columbia Beach main entrance to Prolimnos Beach, and the swim runs along the coast. Awards ceremony at 12:30.

The Visit Cyprus listing also names a 2 km fins race and says the 8 km relay can be done as two swimmers of 4 km each or four of 2 km each. The organiser's programme as we read it does not show a fins race, so check before you plan around one.

Watching

Saturday is the easiest day to watch, because the organiser holds Saturday's races at Pissouri Beach in front of the resort. Sunday's 8 km swim starts at Prolimnos Beach and runs along the coast, so it is harder to follow from one spot. For the village itself, Visit Cyprus describes Pissouri as a village built on a green hillside with views of mountain and sea, a former carob port whose stone warehouses are now restaurants and homes, known locally for halloumi and small seedless Sultanina grapes.

Planning

  • Sea: Visit Cyprus gives open-sea temperatures above 22° C from June to November. Conditions on the day are the organiser's call: see Cyprus in autumn.
  • Getting there: a car is the simple option. See driving in Cyprus.
  • Where to stay: Visit Cyprus puts Pissouri in the Limassol district, so Limassol is the natural base. See the Limassol overview and where to stay in Cyprus.
